Medieval crafts

In the Middle Ages, honest craftsmanship meant more than gold. Our skilled craftsmen present a whole set of forgotten medieval crafts - medieval candlemaking, scribing, tailoring, pottery, leatherwork, shoemaking and tocarpentry. Moreover, the craftsmen are dressed in costumes appropriate to their craft or use equipment for their work, which consists of faithful replicas of period tools or implements. That is why it is possible to see not only the final product of the craftsman, but also the process of creating a candle, a wooden bowl or a leather satchel. The craftsmen can show off their skills individually or as a whole in the form of a medieval marketplace in period stalls.

The Forgotten Crafts project focuses on the organisation of events at Červený Kameň Castle, namely the demonstration of the medieval crafts marketplace at events during Christmas and Easter and the organisation of the Forgotten Crafts Festival www.remeselnyfestival.sk

Our projects

Our civic association recreates the yard of Ulrich Wolfurt. Thanks to a number of preserved written and archaeological findings, we try to faithfully imitate life at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries in the region of Červenokamensky manor.

Within this project we are recreating the court of the nobleman Felicián Zach.
Within the project we also specialize in the reconstruction of kumans in Slovakia.

Crafts

An important part of a medieval man’s equipment was a satchel worn on the belt. In such a satchel a man carried all the most important items that he had to have with him at all times.

Pottery is one of the oldest crafts. The first objects made of baked clay date back to prehistoric times.

The craft of tailoring has been with us ever since mankind crawled out of caves and tried to observe what the world has given so that it would warm up somehow. In the guilds, tailoring as a craft has only been around since the 15th century.

Coinage in Slovakia has its origins in the 5th and 4th centuries BC, when Celtic tribes immigrated to our territory from the near-Alpine region. At the end of the 2nd century BC, an important Celtic centre was located in the area of today’s Bratislava.

Until the invention of the printing press, books were written by hand. This tradition continued until the 16th century. It took a very long time for a scribe to be trained and schooled in his craft, which was coupled with his many years of service in various institutions.

Candle making, as an independent craft organised in a guild, has been known only since the beginning of the 15th century in the territory of today’s Germany. It was one of the richer crafts – both in terms of cost and price of products.

The lathe is a simple but ingenious tool that allows you to transform a piece of wood into useful tools or works of art in a matter of minutes and without much effort.

About us

The civic association Schatmansdorf Častá has been officially operating since 2011. We are dedicated to the representation of the life of people in the late Middle Ages, specifically the presentation of the historical period of the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. The primary focus is on the reconstruction of period crafts and a credible demonstration of the life of a medieval man. We are guided in our craft by descriptions and practices from contemporary literary sources, illuminations and archaeological finds, which serve as inspiration for a faithful illustration of a particular craft.

The craftsman’s equipment includes both traditional and medieval tools. The products are made by the craftsman from materials available in the Middle Ages, so that the finished product is an almost faithful replica of the period one. The medieval camp is represented by the image of a wandering caravan with a field kitchen.
In addition to crafts, we are also devoted to reconstructing the lives of the noblemen Felician Zach (1305-1330) and Ulrich Wolfurt (1390-1418).
OZ Schatmansdorf is also engaged in partial leisure activities, such as litter picking in the Small Carpathian forests on the occasion of Earth Day.
